Ulcinj - a city that connects peoples, cultures and religions

Ulcinj (Albanian: Ulqin, Italian: Dulcigno) is the southernmost city in Montenegro, a place where winds from the Adriatic and Skadar Lake meet, both literally and figuratively, a city that unites peoples, cultures and religions. The city was founded by the Illyrian tribe Aridea in the 5th century BC. After them, all empires left their mark, from ancient Greece onwards.
Ulcinj is an unavoidable destination for lovers of sailing, kiting and camping on the beach... The modest author of these lines, from his own experience, guarantees - whoever visits Ulcinj, Velika plaža and the Bojana river once, will always returns... It is simply inevitable... Nevermind is it camping under the open sky or staying into a luxury apartment. Just youthful adventure with company or planning an engagement to a beloved one... Velika plaža (Great beach) and Ada Bojana are the greatest treasures of Ulcinj, next to the Old Town which simply binds you forever to itself with its narrow streets, parts of the city fortifications, restaurants from which the nice smell of seafood specialties spreads... The view of the sea is wonderful, and it's hard to say whether it's nicer at dawn with coffee or at dusk with watermelon...
The kind and helpful hosts and merchants who invite you to their place with a wide smile, will make you sometimes just not knowing whether to stop by the jewelry store or try baklava (kind of domestic cake), whether to buy a souvenir or a straw hat that will protect you from the hot sun on the beach... or to be just an fancy fashion detail.
According to some historical sources, Miguel de Cervantes, the author of the world's masterpiece, "Don Quixote" was captured in 1575 by pirates from Ulcinj after a clash with a Spanish frigate. Because he had the recommendations of the Spanish king, this meant that he was an important person for whom a rich ransom could be obtained. The locals called him "Cervet", in translation - slave, servant - which is the basis of the surname Cervantes. It was noticeable that he stayed up late at night and wrote something. During the day he was singing, so he attracted the attention of the girls, and among them was Dulcinea (Ulcinj woman - if the legend is to be believed) who was Don Quixote's unrequited love.
If you want to be close to the apartment, there is Mala plaža (Small beach)... if you want a little less crowded, there is the beach Valdanos. If you want absolute freedom of mind and body, a wide view of the open sea and a feeling of freedom, peace and tranquility, Ada Bojana is your destination, without a doubt. On the banks of the river Bojana there are numerous houses that will give you an unforgettable experience of falling asleep with the relaxing sounds of the waves, and before the morning coffee, you can wake up by jumping into the water, directly from the terrace... Due to specific winds, Ada Bojana is a paradise for lovers of windsurfing and kiting. In some parts of the beach it is possible to camp, which we recommend to everyone. Due to its beauty and exceptionality, several films and TV series were shot on Ada Bojana.
While driving from Ulcinj to one of the destinations on Velika plaža (Great beach), all the way to the mouth of the river Bojana into the sea, on the stalls by the road you can buy watermelons, melons, peaches, homemade olive oil, figs... There is plenty of home-grown fruits and vegetables with an irresistible aroma and even better taste comparing to anywhere else.
A lot could be written about Ulcinj and its surroundings, but we don't have to reveal everything. Please, come, see, experience... We will be waiting for you, and we know that you will return for another part of magic...
